A modular design is an approach for product designing which is used to produce a complete product by integrating or combining smaller parts that are independent of each other. With the modular design approach, a complex product (for example, a car) can be broken down or divided into smaller and simpler components that are independently designed and manufactured. Each of these components is then integrated (or assembled)to form the final product.
We use this mathematically minded design method applied to carpets, combining this method with ropes to develop a practical new type of carpet specifically involving a modular building block and floor matting. We wrapped the circular rope around a square base plate to create a symbolic shape, and used an orderly arrangement to organise each of the equally shaped modules into avisual carpet with a monolithic character.
